"Why allow vehicular access? Surely these vehicles are no different from recreational ones." (Ross. February 98, p47).
Due to frustrations at discussions and the failure of compromise, on the part of those against vehicles, many end in simple slanging matches. Mr Wyatt in his final comment to the Deputy Chairman of the Ramblers Association wrote,
"Until the Ramblers' Association changes their policy regarding recreational four-wheel drive users, they are no better than racists, ageists and anyone else with prejudices against minority groups." (Ross, February 98, p47).
Although Mr Wyatt's last comment illustrates how frustrated those defending vehicles on rights of way have become it is rather extreme. Those opposed to vehicles are more akin to those who oppose smoking on courtesy grounds rather than racists or ageists. People can't change their age or skin colour, but those who participate in driving motor vehicles on rights of way could stop if they chose to. Whether they want to stop legally driving rights of way is unlikely though.
